Mammoth Cave is a natural time capsule, nestled deep in the Margaret River Region, where ancient fossil remains of long-extinct Australian Megafauna were unearthed.

Once home to giant animals that roamed the continent before their extinction around 46,000 years ago, the cave offers a rare glimpse into the distant past. Self-guided audio tours, available in English, French, German, Malay, and Mandarin, enable you to explore at your own pace, as you learn about the cave’s geological formations and fossil heritage.

Look out for the 50,000-year-old zygomaturus jawbone, a relic of a large wombat-like herbivore, still embedded in the cave wall. Wander along the gently sloping boardwalk and stairs through chambers adorned with stalactites, stalagmites, and a stream that flows during late winter and early spring.

On existing the cave, you'll step into a tranquil forest setting where a peaceful walk past towering marri and karri trees completes the experience. Step back in time, uncover stories preserved in stone, and enjoy a visit that blends education, exploration, and natural wonder.

This is our second visit to Margaret River Region. Last year we visited 2 of the caves in the region and decided to explore Mammoth Cave this holiday. The caves are easy to find, there was a good amount of parking when we arrived at opening. I do recommend always booking online when visiting the caves, as Mammoth cave is a self guided tour you don’t necessarily have to have a time slot as such unlike the other cave’s, however if there was an influx of tourists you may find you aren’t able to participate due to large numbers so to avoid disappointment I’d definitely recommend booking your tickets prior. We were greeted by the lovely staff members as we entered and were handed our headsets etc for the tour. The member of staff explained clearly how to use them it’s very simple even for children to use. Because the tour is self guided you can view the cave at your leisure. There are points throughout where you have numbers to punch into your recorder so you can hear the guide explain what you are viewing. The cave is huge it’s an amazing site. Due to the narrow paths and many steep stairs it’s not suitable for those who are unsteady on their feet or use walking aides or wheelchairs. After you exit the cave there is a 15 minute walk through the bush via a path which takes you back to the gift shop. There is a road to cross that’s not busy but there is traffic that will be travelling at a reasonable speed so bare that in mind if you have small children with you. My daughters loved the cave as did we and whilst maybe not quite as fabulous as lake cave or jewel cave it’s still definitely worth a visit. We even see huge beehives situated in the small caverns inside the outside rock walls they were a great site too.

Huge cave that just seems to keep going. The self guided tour is really good with a headset and audio player that is easy to use and you can go at your own pace. Bring extra layers for when you’re in the cave if you get cold easily and bring shoes you’re happy to walk in. There are 160+ steps at the exit to get out and a few walking trails around the caves too if you’re feel inclined to walk more. Definitely recommend seeing this place as the fossils are very interesting and the cave is beautiful

Enjoyed this. Spent a leisurely 40mins in the cave. Great audio. Walkways in the cave are quite narrow with handrails each side. This was good for my husband who needs knee replacements. It was easier for him to exit via the entrance than walk the the nature trail.

This is an amazing cave to visit. Like the name implies, it is mammoth. It’s also very beautiful. Especially, the shawl formation. Costs $25 per adult. Comes with a self-guided audio tour, which is quite good. The walk inside and in the cave is really easy. All on a railed boardwalk. You need to go up & down stairs. To get out of the cave you need to climb up over 160 stairs. Not too bad. It’s around 10 degrees in the cave. Lovely in the heat of summer.
